Daimler Truck invests in hydrogen technology for heavy-duty transport

Daimler Truck is pursuing a dual-drive strategy by investing a mid-three-digit million euro amount in hydrogen technology through 2030. The company plans to deploy its first 100 hydrogen-powered vehicles in practical customer use by the end of 2026.

CEO Karin Rådström noted that while battery-electric trucks are suitable for regional and predictable routes, hydrogen offers distinct advantages for heavy loads and long distances due to higher payloads, greater range, and faster refueling times. This approach aims to address sectors where battery weight or limited power grid capacity are significant hurdles.

The success of this transition depends heavily on the development of hydrogen infrastructure, as green hydrogen remains expensive and refueling stations are currently scarce along European highways. To mitigate these challenges, Daimler Truck is working to build the value chain alongside partners such as Volvo and Toyota.
