Overview

Chinese manufacturers continue to expand their presence in the European heavy-duty electric truck market, posing a disruption to a sector responsible for approximately 75 percent of land-based goods transport in Europe. At the IAA Transportation 2026 event in Hannover, FAW Trucks showcased heavy-duty electric and autonomous logistics solutions, including the battery-electric CS925 EV, with sales expected to begin in Austria by 2027.

Daimler Truck has responded with a multi-pathway strategy, highlighting the eActros 600, the LFP-equipped eActros Lowliner, and the liquid hydrogen-powered NextGenH2 Truck. Amazon has already begun deploying Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 units in Germany, with plans to operate over 50 units there by the end of 2026 and more in the United Kingdom. To support hydrogen technology, Daimler Truck is investing several hundred million euros through 2030, aiming to deploy its first 100 hydrogen-powered vehicles by the end of 2026.

Economic pressures and shifting loyalties persist. A 2026 Bain & Company survey indicated that one-third of European fleet operators are open to changing manufacturers, with growing interest in Chinese brands. While China leads in volume and produces 95% of the world's electric trucks, industry leaders note that European engineering and service networks remain competitive advantages.

Other industry participants at IAA 2026 introduced specialized efficiency technologies. Kässbohrer presented the K. SSL 33 E, a lightweight electric cement silo designed to recover “44% of the payload capacity typically lost when using electric motors.” Scania introduced ‘Dynamic’ configurations for its R and S series to improve aerodynamics and safety, alongside an electric configuration capable of a 720 km range. Meanwhile, Volvo Trucks’ heavy-duty electric range was named International Truck of the Year 2027, and CATL unveiled its TECTRANS II modular battery platform.
