Dak Lak reports over 2,000 hand, foot, and mouth disease cases

The Dak Lak Center for Disease Control reported over 2,000 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in the province as of September 14. The outbreak is concentrated in Buon Ma Thuot, with more than 500 cases, and Cu M'gar, with over 200 cases.

At the Tay Nguyen Regional General Hospital, the pediatric department has recorded 853 cases since the beginning of the year, including severe instances requiring mechanical ventilation. Medical professionals warn that certain virus strains, such as EV71, can lead to serious complications including neurological issues, myocarditis, and acute pulmonary edema.

Health officials advise parents to monitor for warning signs such as high fever exceeding 38.5°C for more than 48 hours, persistent crying, or sleep disturbances. Preventive measures include frequent handwashing with soap, ensuring food is thoroughly cooked, using clean water, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces and toys.
