Hand, foot, and mouth disease outbreak in Vietnam

Overview

Vietnam has reported a significant surge in hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) cases, with nearly 100,000 recorded in the first 8.5 months of 2026. This represents a 2.5-fold increase compared to the same period in 2025. Recent data shows an average of over 3,000 new cases per week, particularly in southern provinces and major cities.

As the new school year begins, health authorities are focusing on preventive measures to curb transmission among children. In Ninh Binh province, medical staff at the Tropical Pediatric Department are treating between 60 and 70 inpatients, with 10 to 20 new daily admissions. These admissions include HFMD alongside other viral infections such as Adenovirus and influenza.

Following the surge, the Ministry of Health issued a directive to strengthen prevention and control measures in educational institutions. Surveillance data indicates that over 87% of the recorded cases involve children under five years old, primarily in nursery and kindergarten settings. High infection rates have been specifically noted in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Dong Thap, Tay Ninh, Lam Dong, Da Nang, and Hanoi.

The Ministry has requested that the Ministry of Education and Training and local authorities increase awareness among teachers and parents regarding disease recognition. Educational facilities are instructed to ensure clean environments, adequate lighting, and ventilation. Health officials continue to urge the ‘3 clean’ principle—clean eating, clean living, and clean hands—to mitigate risks.
