Overview

Vietnam has experienced a significant surge in hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) throughout 2026. Surveillance data from the first eight and a half months of the year recorded nearly 100,000 cases, a 2.5-fold increase compared to the same period in 2025. In recent weeks, the country has averaged over 3,000 new cases per week, with high concentrations in major cities and southern provinces.

The Ministry of Health notes that while the disease is endemic, cases typically spike in September and October, coinciding with the start of the new school year. In Ninh Binh province, health authorities have implemented preventive measures to manage viral infections, including HFMD, as children return to classrooms. The Tropical Pediatric Department of Ninh Binh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has reported treating 60 to 70 inpatients, with 10 to 20 new admissions daily.

By mid-to-late September, medical professionals in Ho Chi Minh City reported a sharp rise in severe cases. At Children’s Hospital 1, the Infectious Diseases and Neurology Department treated approximately 50 inpatients, 16 of whom were classified as severe. In Dak Lak province, over 2,000 cases were recorded as of mid-September.

By mid-October, reports from Hanoi indicated a slight downward trend, with 230 HFMD cases recorded in a single week, representing a decrease of 56 cases from the previous week. Two active outbreaks were noted in the capital during that period. Health officials continue to urge the ‘3 clean’ principle—clean eating, clean living, and clean hands—to mitigate transmission risks.
