European solar energy sector sees major projects and insolvency

Major solar energy developments and setbacks are occurring across Europe. In Romania, the energy regulator ANRE has granted authorization for the Dama Solar farm, a project led by Rezolv Energy. Once operational by 2030, the 1.24 GW facility in Arad County is expected to become the largest solar farm in the EU, potentially providing electricity to nearly one million people and helping Romania transition from its current reliance on gas and coal.

In Poland, Sungrow and GOLDBECK SOLAR have signed a strategic agreement to develop a 722 MWp photovoltaic project. This partnership also includes a framework for battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 1 GWh to enhance grid flexibility.

Conversely, the renewable sector faces financial challenges in Portugal. Welink Energy Portugal 2 UK, the owner of Solara4—the country’s largest solar plant located in Alcoutim—has filed for insolvency. The company cited operational difficulties, lower-than-expected electricity production, and falling wholesale energy prices in the Iberian market as primary factors, alongside technical issues and contractor disputes.
