Danger Dan discusses progressive vision loss and its impact on his music

German musician Danger Dan, born Daniel Pongratz, has spoken openly about his struggle with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that is leading to progressive blindness. Having been diagnosed in his early 20s, the 43-year-old artist describes his shrinking field of vision as being akin to looking through a cardboard tube, accompanied by night blindness and light sensitivity.

The condition has significantly impacted his daily life and professional career. He can no longer drive and often requires assistance, such as someone using a flashlight to guide him backstage. To manage his stage performances, he utilizes practical aids including white strips to mark stage edges and a neon cross on his piano stool to help him locate his seat in low light.

Danger Dan is incorporating his experience into his art. His upcoming solo album, ‘Keine Angst’, is set for release on October 2, 2026, and includes the song ‘Dass es hier so schön ist’, which addresses his diagnosis. He noted that facing his mortality has led him to perceive moments more consciously.
