Danger Dan personal health and identity disclosures

Overview

German rapper Danger Dan, born Daniel Pongratz, has shared personal details regarding his sexual orientation and his struggle with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease.

Describing his revelation as a ‘retroactive coming-out’, the artist noted that current political tensions make expressing his identity an important act of solidarity. Regarding his health, Pongratz explained that the condition, which he was diagnosed with in his early 20s, is causing progressive blindness. He compared his shrinking field of vision to ‘looking through a cardboard tube’ and noted symptoms such as night blindness and light sensitivity.

The musician detailed how the disease affects his professional life, requiring him to use flashlights to navigate backstage and specialized aids like white strips to mark stage edges or neon markers to locate his piano stool. He is incorporating these experiences into his upcoming solo album, ‘Keine Angst’, which is scheduled for release on October 2, 2026. He noted that facing his mortality through this diagnosis has led him to perceive moments more consciously.
