Daniel Billings sentenced to 28 years for murder of Molly Ticehurst

Daniel Billings has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the premeditated murder of 28-year-old Molly Ticehurst, a preschool teacher killed in April 2024. At the time of the homicide, Billings was out on bail for alleged sexual assault, stalking, and intimidation, and was in breach of an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO).

While Justice Adams set an initial sentence of 35 years, a statutory 20 per cent discount was applied due to Billings' early guilty plea and demonstrated remorse. This resulted in a non-parole period of 20 years, making him eligible for parole in April 2044.

The case has sparked significant legal debate and public outcry, leading to the introduction of “Molly’s Law” in State Parliament. These reforms aim to tighten bail thresholds and mandate electronic tracking for offenders to prevent similar tragedies.
