Sentencing and appeal of Daniel Billings

Overview

Daniel Billings was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the premeditated murder of Molly Ticehurst, a preschool teacher killed in April 2024. At the time of the attack, Billings was on bail for alleged sexual assault and stalking and was in breach of an Apprehended Violence Order. While Justice Adams initially set a 35-year sentence, a 20 per cent discount was applied for an early guilty plea, resulting in a 20-year non-parole period.

The case prompted legislative action through the introduction of ‘Molly’s Law’ in State Parliament, which seeks to tighten bail thresholds and mandate electronic tracking for offenders.

Following the sentencing, Billings filed a notice of intention to appeal his sentence in an attempt to reduce his prison term. While the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions confirmed it would not appeal, local MP Philip Donato criticized the decision not to seek a harsher penalty, describing it as a ‘weak decision’ that fails to reflect the severity of the crime.
