Daniel Seeram remains in custody after assault conviction
Daniel Seeram, the former Region Four Chairman and National Border Patrol Director, will remain in custody following his conviction for assaulting his ex-wife, Farzana Hamid. A High Court judge, Justice Joy Persaud-Singh, dismissed an application by Seeram’s attorney, Nigel Hughes, to overturn a magistrate’s decision to remand him to prison pending his sentencing.
The conviction stems from a September 2023 incident at a Cummings Lodge apartment. Magistrate Abigail Gibbs found Seeram guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm, rejecting his claim of self-defence. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that Hamid sustained injuries to her eye, wrist, arm, thigh, and breast, and that property was damaged during the confrontation.
In his application for judicial review, Seeram’s legal team argued that the injuries were minor, specifically describing them as a haematoma or blood clot that did not require hospital detention. The defense contended that the remand was unreasonable given the nature of the summary-tried offence. Seeram is scheduled to be sentenced on November 2.
