Conviction and detention of Daniel Seeram
Overview
Daniel Seeram, the National Border Patrol Director and former Region Four Chairman, was convicted of assaulting his former wife, Farzana Hamid, causing actual bodily harm. The conviction follows a trial regarding a September 2023 incident at a Cummings Lodge apartment, where Hamid testified to sustaining multiple injuries—including to her eye, wrist, arm, thigh, and breast—and witnessing property damage.
Following the conviction by Magistrate Abigail Gibbs, Seeram was remanded to custody. His legal counsel, Nigel Hughes, filed an application for judicial review with the High Court to overturn the decision to remand him to prison pending sentencing, arguing that the injuries were minor, such as a “haematoma or blood clot,” and did not warrant detention. However, High Court Justice Joy Persaud-Singh dismissed the application, ruling that the magistrate acted lawfully and within her jurisdiction.
Following his detention at the Sparendaam Police Station, the Guyana Prison Service confirmed that Seeram was transferred to the Camp Street penitentiary on a Friday night. He remains in custody awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for November 2, 2026.
