Danish EV owners overpay 300 million DKK annually on charging

A new analysis from the industry organization Drivkraft Danmark reveals that Danish electric vehicle owners are overpaying for charging by approximately 300 million DKK annually. This excess cost is attributed to opaque subscription models and the bundling of charging agreements with vehicle sales. According to the report, 52% of Danish EV drivers hold fixed charging agreements with Clever, and 58% of those customers are uncertain if they are paying too much for their monthly consumption.

Drivkraft Danmark is calling for a ban on the bundling of charging contracts during car sales and the merging of home and public charging solutions to increase transparency. The organization notes that fixed subscriptions may also discourage drivers from charging when renewable energy is most abundant and cheapest.

In contrast to these subscription challenges, a report from the ICCT suggests that the operational costs of electric vehicles are significantly lower than fossil fuel alternatives. In Europe, EVs were found to be 33% cheaper to operate on average than gasoline cars. In Denmark, favorable electricity tax rates can allow drivers with home chargers to operate vehicles for as little as 15-20 øre per kilometer, compared to 1.00-1.30 DKK for gasoline vehicles.
