Electric vehicle economic and environmental considerations

Discussions regarding the economic and environmental aspects of electric vehicle (EV) ownership in Denmark have focused on long-term costs and operational efficiency.

Initial reports highlighted the rising costs of battery replacements as early EV models age. Replacement prices vary significantly by model, ranging from approximately 56,000 DKK for a Smart EQ to as much as 175,000 DKK for high-end Tesla models. To manage these expenses, some manufacturers have introduced module-level repairs that can potentially halve the cost. Research also indicated that despite high initial manufacturing carbon debts, EVs provide a climate advantage over internal combustion engines after several years of use.

Subsequent analysis shifted focus to charging expenditures, revealing that Danish EV owners may be overpaying by approximately 300 million DKK annually. This issue is linked to opaque subscription models and the bundling of charging agreements with vehicle sales. Industry organizations are now calling for increased transparency and a ban on such bundling. Despite these subscription complexities, data suggests that the operational costs of EVs remain significantly lower than gasoline alternatives, particularly when utilizing favorable electricity tax rates for home charging.
