Danish film ‘Kvinde ukendt’ receives critical acclaim at Venice Film Festival

The Danish film ‘Kvinde ukendt’ (Unknown Woman), directed by May el-Toukhy, has received critical acclaim following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Critics from outlets such as The Guardian and Soundvenue have praised the film, describing it as a ‘painful portrait of survival’ and a sharp drama. The film follows a young woman named Marie in May 1945, navigating a secret that threatens her upcoming marriage.

May el-Toukhy is the first female director to represent Denmark in the festival's main competition in 36 years. In discussions regarding the film's selection, el-Toukhy highlighted structural gender inequalities within the film industry, noting that female directors are rarely labeled as ‘geniuses’ in the media.

‘Kvinde ukendt’ is currently one of three films competing to be Denmark's official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. It is scheduled for release in Danish cinemas on February 4, 2027.
