Release of Danish film Kvinde ukendt

The Danish film ‘Kvinde ukendt’ (Woman Unknown), directed by May el-Toukhy, has garnered significant attention at the Venice International Film Festival. Following its premiere, the film received critical acclaim, with reviewers describing it as a ‘painful portrait of survival’ and a ‘sophisticated thriller.’

During its world premiere, the film received a seven-minute standing ovation. The drama, set in Denmark shortly after World War II, explores themes of female invisibility and the social consequences for women accused of relationships with German soldiers. It is a co-production involving Denmark, Sweden, and Latvia, with much of the filming occurring in Riga.

Director May el-Toukhy, the first female director to represent Denmark in the festival's main competition in 36 years, has used the platform to discuss structural gender inequalities in the film industry. The film is currently one of three contenders to be Denmark's official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film and is scheduled to open the Riga International Film Festival on October 15.
