Danish pensioners face tax risks and lower savings
Thousands of Danes are at risk of being taxed twice on their pension savings due to over-contributions to ratepension accounts. According to Skattestyrelsen, nearly 35,000 citizens have contributed more than the allowable deduction limit, totaling several hundred million kroner.
When contributions exceed the limit, individuals do not receive an immediate tax deduction, yet the funds are still taxed again upon withdrawal during retirement. For 2025, the deduction limit for ratepension contributions is set at 65,500 kroner, which includes both employee and employer contributions. This limit can be inadvertently exceeded during job changes or shifts in pension schemes.
Additionally, new analysis from the industry organization F&P indicates that Danes are saving for retirement for a shorter duration than expected. On average, full pension contributions only occur for 27 years, rather than the anticipated 42 years, due to periods of education, unemployment, and part-time work. This trend is expected to result in lower overall pension wealth and coverage rates.
