Danish pension system and retiree income
Overview
The Danish pension landscape is facing both regulatory challenges and adjustments to payout structures. Skattestyrelsen has identified that nearly 35,000 citizens risk being taxed twice on their savings due to over-contributions to ratepension accounts, totaling several hundred million kroner. Furthermore, analysis suggests Danes are saving for retirement for shorter durations than previously anticipated, which may lead to lower overall pension wealth.
To address income security, the pension provider ATP announced it will increase lifelong pension payouts starting January 1. This represents the fifth increase in ten years and affects 1.1 million current and future pensioners. ATP CEO Martin Præstegaard noted the increase aims to provide an economic foundation for secure and dignified lives, particularly for the 350,000 pensioners who rely solely on public pensions and ATP payments. For a 67-year-old receiving a full pension, a 2 percent increase equates to approximately 9,600 DKK over a 20-year period.
Additionally, the Danish government has proposed allocating 2.1 billion kroner annually in its budget to support low-income pensioners with limited assets. According to Mads Moberg Reumert, chief economist at Danica Pension, approximately 150,000 pensioners could receive a new monthly benefit of 1,600 kroner before tax. The proposal also includes raising the liquid asset threshold for the ‘ældrecheck’ (elderly check), which is currently forfeited if assets exceed 108,000 kroner, to allow more pensioners to qualify for the benefit.
