Danish youth purchase counterfeit goods at high rates

A new analysis conducted by Epinion for the Danish Patent and Trademark Office reveals that nearly one in three young Danes aged 15 to 24 have intentionally purchased counterfeit goods within the last year.

The study indicates that young women are more likely to buy fake items, with 34 percent reporting such purchases compared to 28 percent of young men. Younger demographics show even higher rates, with 37 percent of those aged 15–17 having bought counterfeit products. The most common items include clothing and accessories, followed by shoes, bags, cosmetics, jewelry, and watches.

Authorities have expressed concern regarding the risks associated with these purchases. According to Barbara Suhr-Jessen, a section manager at the Patent and Trademark Office, many young consumers only become aware of the potential consequences after experiencing problems. The analysis shows that 58 percent of young people who purchase counterfeit goods have experienced negative consequences from their purchases.
