Dansby Swanson nearing return to Chicago Cubs lineup

Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson is nearing a return to the major league lineup following an oblique strain sustained on August 16. After being placed on the injured list, Swanson is expected to undergo a brief rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa to regain his timing.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell indicated that the team is optimistic about the recovery timeline. The plan involves Swanson participating in defensive drills and using a Trajekt machine to simulate major-league pitching velocities. If the rehab assignment proceeds smoothly, Swanson is targeted to rejoin the active roster around September 18 for a series against the Cincinnati Reds.

His return is viewed as critical for the Cubs' postseason aspirations, as he provides a central component to the team's infield defense. In his absence, the team has utilized Nico Hoerner and rookie Pedro Ramírez at the shortstop position.
