Danube River drought reveals World War II relics

Extreme drought and heatwaves have caused the water levels of the Danube River to recede, revealing numerous artifacts from World War II. In Serbia, at least 20 Nazi ships, some containing unexploded ammunition, have emerged from the riverbed. In Hungary, a Nazi military motorcycle and identification plates from German soldiers were discovered. In Slovakia, authorities had to safely remove and detonate a 680-kilogram bomb dropped by the British Royal Air Force that had been submerged for over 80 years.

Observers suggest these historical reappearances serve as a metaphor for the resurgence of far-right political movements in Europe. The text notes a growing trend of political nostalgia for eras of absolute European power, exemplified by the 2025 Munich Security Conference. During that event, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance criticized European leaders for maintaining political barriers that previously isolated far-right parties.
