Danube River drought revealing WWII relics
Overview
Extreme drought and heatwaves have caused water levels in the Danube River to recede, exposing various World War II artifacts across several countries. In Serbia, at least 20 Nazi ships, some containing unexploded ammunition, have emerged from the riverbed. In Slovakia, authorities successfully detonated a 680-kilogram bomb dropped by the British Royal Air Force that had been submerged for over 80 years.
In Hungary, the receding waters revealed a German DKW NZ 350-1 motorcycle near Budapest. The recovery operation, managed by the Hungarian Military Institute, required bomb disposal experts to secure the area due to the presence of German Tellermine 35 anti-tank mines and hand grenades. Along with the motorcycle, two sets of unidentified human remains were discovered. The German War Graves Commission recovered two intact dog tags belonging to a Wehrmacht soldier and a Waffen-SS member, though their connection to the remains is currently unknown.
