Danube River water levels continue to fall in Bulgaria

Water levels of the Danube River are continuing to decline along the Bulgarian stretch, creating significant challenges for river navigation. Data from the Executive Agency Danube River Research and Maintenance indicates substantial drops in water levels at several monitoring stations.

As of late August 2026, notable decreases have been recorded in Ruse, Silistra, Oryahovo, Svishtov, Novo Selo, Vidin, Lom, and Nikopol. The most significant drops have been reported in Ruse and Silistra. These low water levels have led to the maintenance of navigation restrictions across the entire river section, with authorities maintaining a list of critical areas where fairway dimensions are reduced.

The hydrological situation remains complex. In the area of Batin Barzh Island, a sandbar remains outside the shipping channel, requiring vessels to pass with increased caution.
