Danube low water crisis

Overview

In late July 2026, Bulgarian authorities were actively stabilising the Srebarna Reservoir despite the Danube’s critically low level of minus 88 cm. Water was diverted from the Western Canal, pumped into the reservoir, and over one million cubic metres had been added. Ongoing sand‑clog removal and pipeline extensions were also supporting the reservoir’s ecosystem, attracting large numbers of waterbirds.

A week later, Serbian officials reported that the Danube at Apatin remained at a historic low of minus 109 cm, with only a modest rise to around minus 89 cm expected by mid‑August. The low water continued to halt navigation, strand vessels, and reduce fishing, while also affecting energy production and water quality across the basin.
