DARIA Program launches free breast cancer screening in Romania
The DARIA national screening program, ‘Active Detection, Responsibility, Information and Access’, has launched to increase early breast cancer detection among vulnerable populations in Romania. The initiative targets asymptomatic women aged 50 to 69 who face social or economic disadvantages.
In the North-East region, the Regional Institute of Oncology (IRO) Iași is coordinating activities across the counties of Iași, Vaslui, Bacău, Botoșani, Neamț, and Suceava. To reach marginalized communities, a mobile unit will begin conducting free mammographies at the end of October. The regional goal is to include 30,000 women in the program by December 2029.
Nationally, the project aims to reach 149,342 people, with approximately 119,000 women expected to receive screening services. The program is part of a consortium of 13 institutions, with national coordination provided by the ‘Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță’ Oncology Institute in Cluj-Napoca. The initiative will operate across eight regions of the country through 2029.
