Breast cancer screening access in Romania
Overview
Romania has been identified as having one of the lowest numbers of mammography machines per capita in the European Union, with only 1.1 units per 100,000 inhabitants. This shortage, combined with a geographic imbalance that concentrates equipment in large cities and university centers, has left rural populations with limited access to essential screening services. Experts noted that late detection contributes to over 3,500 deaths annually in the country.
In response to these challenges, the DARIA national screening program, ‘Active Detection, Responsibility, Information and Access’, has been launched. The initiative targets asymptomatic women aged 50 to 69, specifically those facing social or economic disadvantages.
To improve access, the program will utilize mobile units to conduct free mammographies, particularly in the North-East region. Nationally, the project aims to reach approximately 149,342 people, with an expectation that 119,000 women will receive screening services through 2029.
