Darializa Avila Chevalier arrested during UN protest in NYC
Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 13th Congressional District, was arrested on September 24, 2026, during a protest near the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan. The demonstration, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, occurred as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly.
Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist, was charged with disorderly conduct after protesters blocked traffic on First Avenue and 39th Street. She was among approximately 80 people detained by the NYPD. Other arrested individuals included New York City Council members Chi Ossé and Alexa Avilés.
The protesters demanded an end to U.S. military aid to Israel and criticized the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Avila Chevalier referred to Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and expressed opposition to U.S. funding of Israeli military operations. Her campaign has indicated intentions to support legislation such as the Block the Bombs Act to curb military aid.
