Protests against Israel near United Nations in New York

Overview

On September 24, 2026, protesters gathered near the United Nations headquarters in New York City to demonstrate against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the UN General Assembly. Organized by groups such as Jewish Voice for Peace, the demonstration involved sit-ins and the blocking of intersections on First Avenue and 39th Street.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) detained approximately 100 individuals during the protest. Authorities described the event as an ‘unannounced demonstration’ and stated that protesters were warned to clear the area but refused to comply, leading to multiple arrests. Notable detainees included actress Susan Sarandon, actress Hannah Einbinder, comedian Caleb Hiron, and New York City Council members Chi Ossé and Alexa Avilés. Also detained was Dariliza Avila Chevalier (also referred to as Darieliza Avila Sevalle), the Democratic nominee for New York’s 13th Congressional District, who was charged with disorderly conduct.

Protesters used the demonstration to demand an end to U.S. military aid to Israel and to criticize the conflict in Gaza. Demonstrators displayed signs with messages such as ‘Stop arming Israel’ and ‘End the genocide’, while Avila Chevalier referred to Netanyahu as a “war criminal”. Following the arrests, Einbinder expressed on social media her hope that images of the detentions would draw attention to the situation in Palestine and South Lebanon. The protest occurred amid tensions regarding an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu for alleged war crimes in Gaza, an allegation Israel denies. During his address to the assembly, Netanyahu accused those who left the room of ‘moral cowardice.’

Among those arrested was actress and activist Susan Sarandon. Her detention during this event follows a decades-long history of political engagement and civil disobedience, including previous arrests in 1982, 1999, 2018, and 2023.
