Data center and energy storage projects proposed in Bavaria

Two major data center and energy infrastructure projects are being proposed in the Bavaria region of Germany, sparking both strategic planning and local opposition.

In Niederaichbach, the investment firm Advisum plans to develop a combined AI data center with 100 megawatts of capacity and a 900-megawatt battery storage system. The project aims to support renewable energy integration by smoothing load and feed-in peaks, coinciding with the expansion of the Isar substation to accommodate up to four gigawatts via the SuedOstLink by 2030.

In Wenzenbach, near Regensburg, developer Ignis Energy Germany is proposing a 300-megawatt data center. This project has met resistance from a local citizens' initiative, which cites concerns over the conversion of agricultural and forest land into industrial zones. Critics argue the development would interfere with a biodiverse natural area and impact historical sites, such as the Abbachhof farm.
