German energy storage and data center development

Germany is expanding its energy storage and digital infrastructure through large-scale projects aimed at stabilizing the power grid and integrating renewable energy.

In Saxony-Anhalt, Münch Energie inaugurated the country’s largest operational battery storage cluster near Leuna/Krumpa. The facility provides a 250-megawatt power output and an initial capacity of 500 megawatt-hours, with plans to reach 800 megawatt-hours later in 2026. The project is intended to mitigate price fluctuations and ensure supply security by capturing surplus wind and solar energy.

In Bavaria, new proposals have emerged for combined data center and energy storage facilities. In Niederaichbach, Advisum plans a 100-megawatt AI data center paired with a 900-megawatt battery storage system to support grid integration. Meanwhile, a proposed 300-megawatt data center in Wenzenbach by Ignis Energy Germany has faced local opposition from citizens concerned about the impact on agricultural land, forests, and biodiversity.
