Data center density surges to accommodate AI workloads

Data centers are undergoing a significant shift toward increased rack density rather than physical expansion. Due to constraints in land availability, grid capacity, and construction timelines, operators are squeezing more computing power into existing footprints.

Driven largely by the demands of AI, rack power consumption has surged. While average rack density was approximately 7 kW three years ago, industry surveys indicate an average of 27 kW per rack in 2026. Dedicated AI racks are significantly more intensive, consuming between 80 kW and 130 kW each to ensure GPUs are packed tightly enough for high-speed communication.

This density shift presents electrical challenges. Higher power requirements necessitate larger transformers, which create a stiffer source and increase available fault current downstream. This makes the short-time withstand current rating for medium voltage equipment a critical specification for modern dense builds.
