Data center expansion drives energy shifts in Spain
The expansion of data centers in Spain is driving significant shifts in regional energy dynamics, presenting both economic opportunities and environmental concerns.
In Zamora, a projected artificial intelligence data center in Monfarracinos with an estimated 4.6 billion euro investment has raised alarms. Researcher Manuel García Domínguez of the CSIC warned that the facility could consume an annual amount of energy equivalent to 20% of the current total consumption of Castilla y León. He also noted that 30% of its energy would come from a thermal plant expected to emit approximately 307,000 tons of CO2 annually, potentially impacting decarbonization goals.
Conversely, in Aragón, data centers are viewed as an economic driver. The region currently generates 167% of the energy it consumes, allowing it to export 51% of its production to other autonomous communities. Energy consumption in Aragón rose by 9% last year, significantly outpacing the national average of 2.9%, a trend attributed largely to the influx of data center operations.
