Data center expansion in Finland may impact Estonian electricity prices

The expansion of large-scale data centers in Finland may impact electricity prices in Estonia. Because data centers require high volumes of electricity around the clock, their presence in Finland reduces the amount of cheap surplus electricity available for export to Estonia.

Experts suggest that Estonia could consider attracting similar data center investments to improve its own market stability, particularly as a key consumer for potential future nuclear power. However, adding large consumers in Estonia presents its own challenges. If electricity demand increases significantly without a corresponding increase in production, it could drive prices up.

Since much of the new production relies on wind and solar, there are concerns regarding grid stability during periods of low wind or sunlight. While data centers bring investment, jobs, and tax revenue, their economic benefits must be weighed against the continuous energy demand they place on the system.
