Poland data centers could supply 17% of district heating demand
Waste heat generated by data centers has the potential to significantly transform Poland's district heating sector. According to reports by the Polish Data Center Association (PLDCA) and PwC Polska, recovered heat could eventually cover up to 17% of the country's total district heating demand by 2035.
As the digital economy grows through AI and cloud services, Poland's data center operational capacity is expected to rise from approximately 250 MW currently to over 550 MW by 2031. Long-term projections by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) suggest capacities could reach 3.1 GW by 2036 and 5 GW by 2040.
To capitalize on this, Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) and NASK are planning collaborative projects to build data center networks. This initiative aims to utilize server heat for urban heating, reducing reliance on coal and gas. The project leverages PGE's energy infrastructure and land to create more cost-effective and secure digital infrastructure.
