Dauphin Regional Health Centre reopens emergency department

The emergency department at Dauphin Regional Health Centre in Manitoba officially reopened on Monday, restoring 24/7 emergency services to the region following a closure caused by significant flooding on July 1. The facility is currently operating using temporary electrical and mechanical infrastructure to support operations.

While the reopening marks a milestone for the community, many hospital services remain unavailable. Due to damage to the HVAC system and power infrastructure, chemotherapy, labour and delivery, surgery, and endoscopy services are still being provided at other facilities. Shared Health officials stated that the priority is to eventually restore care for cancer and dialysis patients closer to home, though no timeline for full operational status has been established.

The Manitoba Nurses Union has raised concerns regarding the reopening, describing it as premature and citing issues with temporary infrastructure, such as the use of external trailers for bathrooms. However, Shared Health leadership emphasized that the immediate priority was ensuring patients have access to life-saving emergency care without the need for long-distance transport.
