David Assayag to be theme of São Paulo samba school in 2027
The samba school Primeira da Cidade Líder has announced that Amazonian singer and toada performer David Assayag will be the theme for its 2027 parade at the Anhembi Sambadrome in São Paulo. Titled ‘David Assayag, A Voz da Amazônia’, the theme was developed by carnival designer Léo Del Pezzo, also known as Pai Léo.
The parade will explore Assayag’s career and his deep connection to the Parintins Folklore Festival, specifically his roles with the Caprichoso and Garantido boi-bumbás. The narrative aims to highlight Amazonian ancestry, forest peoples, religiosity, and popular culture, creating a symbolic link between Amazonian traditions and African drumming.
The school, which will be the ninth to parade in São Paulo’s Access Group 2, also intends to honor Assayag’s devotion to Nossa Senhora do Carmo, the patron saint of Parintins. The released samba-enredo references the iconic blue and red colors of the Parintins festival to celebrate the singer as a symbol of regional identity.
