British Columbia election: Eby proposes new condo taxes as candidates emerge
As British Columbia prepares for a snap provincial election called by NDP leader David Eby, new housing tax proposals and candidate announcements have emerged. Eby has pledged to increase the province's speculation and vacancy tax, raising rates to 2% for domestic buyers and 5% for foreign purchasers. Additionally, he proposed a new 'unsold condo tax' that would levy 2% of an assessed value on units vacant for over a year, increasing by 1% annually. This move targets approximately 5,000 unsold units in the Lower Mainland, valued at an estimated $4.5 billion.
In the political arena, the B.C. Conservative Party has named White Rock Mayor Megan Knight as its candidate for the Surrey South riding. Knight will face Elenore Sturko, the leader of the CentreBC Party, who is also running in Surrey South. The provincial election is scheduled for October 24, following municipal elections on October 17.
