David J. Rush pleads guilty to $194M CIA fraud and intelligence breach

David J. Rush, a former high-ranking CIA official, pleaded guilty in a Virginia federal court to wire fraud. Rush admitted to fabricating highly classified government programs to divert approximately $194 million in public funds for his personal enrichment.

According to court documents, Rush used the stolen money to acquire luxury real estate in Florida, including properties in Palm Beach and Hobe Sound, as well as high-end watches, luxury vehicles, and hundreds of gold bars. During an FBI search of his Virginia residence, investigators seized 298 gold bars valued at approximately $46 million, along with $2.1 million in cash.

Beyond the financial fraud, Rush admitted to disclosing sensitive descriptive information about a clandestine U.S. government human intelligence source to a foreign government official. This disclosure has raised significant national security concerns regarding the safety of the source and American officers.

Rush, who allegedly falsified his academic and military credentials to secure his position at the agency, faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. He has agreed to forfeit assets tied to the scheme and pay restitution totaling approximately $194 million. Sentencing is scheduled for January 28.
