David Lisnard and Bruno Retailleau compete for right-wing leadership
David Lisnard, the Mayor of Cannes and president of the Association of French Mayors, and Bruno Retailleau, leader of Les Républicains, are engaged in a competitive race for influence within the French right ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Polling indicates both candidates are currently oscillating between 6.5% and 9% of voter intentions. While Retailleau maintains a stronghold on the traditional right-wing electorate, Lisnard has seen a significant surge in public recognition. According to Ifop director Frédéric Dabi, three-quarters of French citizens now know Lisnard, compared to only one-third earlier this summer. This rise in notoriety is supported by high social media engagement, with Lisnard receiving nearly one million mentions on X in a sixty-day period.
Despite their competition, the two candidates share similar policy platforms, including proposals for pension capitalization and significant budgetary savings. Their distinction lies primarily in political style and voter base: Retailleau draws from traditional conservative circles, while Lisnard attracts voters from the presidential camp, Éric Zemmour’s supporters, and Marine Le Pen’s base.
