David Ortiz linked to predatory lending network in Dominican Republic
A ProPublica investigation has linked MLB Hall of Famer David Ortiz to a network of high-interest lenders in the Dominican Republic that target the future signing bonuses of young baseball prospects.
Reports indicate that Ortiz was involved as a financier in business dealings with lender Santo Caraballo. One contract discovered by investigators involved a 13-year-old prospect, where Ortiz and Caraballo were named to receive 35% of any future bonus in exchange for providing financial support, housing, and training. While the player in that specific case never signed, the investigation highlights a broader pattern where high-interest loans are attached to nearly 80% of Dominican MLB bonuses.
In one instance involving prospect Belfi Rivera, a significant portion of a promised $1.8 million bonus was reportedly diverted to trainers and Caraballo through various agreements.
In response to the allegations, Ortiz’s legal representative stated that his business relationship with Caraballo began to end approximately 18 to 24 months ago after Ortiz noticed conduct he considered inappropriate. Ortiz has denied knowingly exploiting players, asserting that the loans were intended for trainers rather than the children.
