Legal and investigative controversies involving David Ortiz

Former Major League Baseball player David Ortiz has faced various legal and investigative controversies in the Dominican Republic.

Initially, Ortiz announced legal action against a digital platform for disseminating what he described as “baseless claims” regarding his personal and family life. His legal team stated he would defend his rights against content creators using “sensationalist narratives” to drive engagement.

Subsequently, a ProPublica investigation linked Ortiz to a network of high-interest lenders in the Dominican Republic that target the future signing bonuses of young baseball prospects. The report detailed business dealings with lender Santo Caraballo, including a contract where Ortiz and Caraballo were named to receive 35% of a prospect's future bonus in exchange for financial support and training.

In response to these allegations, Ortiz’s legal representative stated that his business relationship with Caraballo ended approximately 18 to 24 months prior after Ortiz noticed conduct he considered “inappropriate.” Ortiz has denied knowingly exploiting players, asserting that the loans were intended for trainers.
