Dead Humpback Whale Found Near Danish Island Anholt, Likely the Rescued “Timmy”

A large dead humpback whale, estimated at 10‑15 metres long, was sighted about 75 metres off the coast of the Danish island of Anholt. Danish marine authority Morten Abildstrøm said the carcass is “probably the whale known as Timmy,” which had been rescued from the Baltic Sea earlier this year and released in early May. The animal’s GPS tracker has not transmitted any data since its release, leaving its condition uncertain.

Authorities plan to take a tissue sample when low tide permits, but there are no immediate plans to retrieve the carcass unless it drifts closer to shore. The Danish Environmental Agency warned of a potential explosion risk from gas buildup in the dead animal and advised the public to keep a safe distance. Experts from Germany and Denmark are coordinating the investigation, hoping the sample will confirm the whale’s identity and provide insight for future strandings.

The incident has sparked renewed debate over the earlier rescue operation, the failure of the tracking device, and the overall handling of the whale’s plight.
