Dead humpback whale 'Timmy' remains off Denmark's Anholt island
A humpback whale identified as "Timmy" was found dead in shallow waters off the Danish island of Anholt. The whale had been rescued in a private effort, moved toward the North Sea, and later stranded and died two weeks later. German Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) confirmed the carcass lies in Danish jurisdiction and said German and Danish authorities will decide its disposal, while also seeking to recover the transmitter attached to the whale for research data.
Despite warnings from officials about the risk of toxic gases and disease transmission, tourists gathered at the site, with video footage showing an older man climbing onto the whale’s back to pose for photos. Authorities urged the public to keep a safe distance, citing safety concerns and the need to preserve the carcass for possible scientific examination.
