Dead Humpback Whale 'Timmy' Tracked; Carcass to be Processed into Biodiesel
A humpback whale known as "Timmy" was found dead on the Danish island of Anholt. An autopsy by Danish experts found no obvious injuries, parasites, nets or other foreign objects, and confirmed the animal was a female that had not been pregnant. The carcass is being taken to the Danish mainland, where Daka Denmark will convert the fat into biodiesel and use the remaining material as biomass for a cement plant.
German Environment Minister Till Backhaus presented the analysis of a satellite tracker that had been attached to the whale before it was released in the North Sea. The data show the whale's movements after its release on 2 May, following a private initiative that transported the weakened animal from the Baltic Sea toward the Skagerrak. The tracker information will be released to the public after final evaluation.
