Deadly fire in New Delhi kills 21 and injures dozens

A fire broke out on Wednesday in a multi‑storey building in Malviya Nagar, south New Delhi, killing at least 21 people and injuring many others. The building housed a ground‑floor restaurant and an upper‑level hotel, and dense smoke filled the structure.

More than 40 occupants were rescued by eight fire‑engine units while police and emergency crews worked to control the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced financial assistance of 200,000 rupees (about $2,100) for each victim’s family. Officials noted that inadequate building codes and safety standards often contribute to such incidents in densely populated Indian cities.
