Jauhar University demolition order sparks extended protests

Entities: Rampur Development Authority · Mohammad Ali Jauhar University · Azam Khan · Zaheeruddin · Tej Narayan Pandey

Overview

The Rampur Development Authority (RDA) issued a demolition notice on 15 July 2026 for 38 of the 40 buildings on the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University campus, invoking the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act, 1973. Students began an indefinite sit‑in at the main gate, demanding withdrawal of the order. Vice‑Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zaheeruddin maintains the structures were completed by 2016 and that RDA jurisdiction only began in 2024, rendering the notice retroactive. A hearing was scheduled for 29 July, and the RDA later granted a 15‑day extension, setting a deadline of 5 August and warning that bulldozers and cost‑recovery measures would be employed if compliance was not achieved.

A nine‑member Samajwadi Party delegation led by Akhilesh Yadav visited Rampur on 25 July, describing the action as politically motivated and harmful to poor, Dalit and minority students. An interim stay was subsequently issued, which the university says merely postpones the deadline rather than cancels demolition. Activist Razia Masood condemned the move as a sweeping misuse of power. Protests have broadened to include alumni, local residents and the youth movement Cockroach Janta Party, while a minister resigned in New Delhi amid nationwide education‑reform demonstrations. Around 3,000 students remain on the 250‑acre campus as legal battles continue.
