Deafheaven surprise-releases new black metal EP
The Californian black metal band Deafheaven has surprise-released a new EP titled ‘At Work in the Fields of the Bomb’. Produced by Arthur Rizk and released via Roadrunner Records, the EP features three tracks: ‘Hunter’, ‘Three Princes’, and ‘Sorry Laid The Hearth’.
According to vocalist George Clarke, the band chose a surprise release to avoid the lengthy rollout typically used for full-length albums, opting instead to treat it more like a pop or rap release. The music is described as some of the band's heaviest and most high-energy work to date, leaning into a pure black metal sound rather than their usual progressive style.
The EP's concept is inspired by a 1987 book by photographer Robert Del Tredici. The work explores the contrast between the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons and the mundane, everyday routines and systems that make such destruction possible. This release comes while the band is on a North American tour supporting Mastodon and Alcest.
