Deafheaven surprise EP release
Overview
The San Francisco-based black metal band Deafheaven has released a surprise EP titled ‘At Work in the Fields of the Bomb’. Produced by Arthur Rizk and released via Roadrunner Records, the three-track project includes ‘Hunter’, ‘Three Princes’, and ‘Sorry Laid The Hearth’.
Vocalist George Clarke indicated the band chose a surprise release to avoid the lengthy promotional rollouts typical of full-length albums. Musically, the EP represents a shift toward a heavier, more traditional black metal sound characterized by intense blastbeats and tremolo riffs, moving away from the band’s usual progressive or shoegaze styles.
The EP’s concept is inspired by a 1987 book by photographer Robert Del Tredici, exploring the contrast between the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons and the mundane routines that enable such destruction.
