Deco Proteste reports rise in Portugal food basket costs

The cost of an essential food basket in Portugal increased by 2.11 euros over the last week, reaching a total of 254.73 euros, according to consumer protection association Deco Proteste.

The basket, which monitors 63 essential items including meat, frozen goods, fruits, vegetables, dairy, groceries, and fish, follows a previous weekly decrease of 0.94 euros. Significant recent price hikes were noted in spiral pasta (up 22%), spaghetti (up 21%), and crustless sliced bread (up 14%).

Compared to one year ago, the basket is 14.17 euros (5.89%) more expensive. Since the beginning of 2022, the price increases have been even more substantial, with beef for boiling rising by 120%, large cod by 89%, and cabbage by 88%.
