Deep's Vanguard subsea habitat installed on Florida Keys reef
The ocean‑engineering firm Deep has completed the deployment of its pilot subsea human habitat, Vanguard, on the seafloor at Tennessee Reef within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The 35‑foot long, 8‑foot wide habitat sits on a foundation at a depth of 56 feet (17 m) and can accommodate up to four aquanauts for missions lasting five days or more.
Vanguard is equipped for a range of scientific tasks, including coral‑reef restoration, continuous monitoring of water quality and coral health, and studies of human physiology in extreme environments. The system includes a surface support buoy that supplies air, power and satellite communications via an umbilical cable. Classification and technical assurance were provided by DNV, and the habitat is now undergoing sea‑acceptance testing and crew‑training ahead of its first research missions, which will also serve as a stepping‑stone toward Deep’s larger Sentinel habitat planned for later this decade.
