Vanguard subsea habitat deployed off Florida

Overview

British marine‑technology firm DEEP has completed the deployment of its experimental 35‑ft (10.7 m) subsea habitat Vanguard on the seafloor of Tennessee Reef within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary at a depth of about 17 m. The tube‑shaped module sits on a concrete foundation and is tethered to a surface buoy that supplies breathable air, power, satellite communications and waste handling via an umbilical cable. Vanguard can host up to four aquanauts for missions of five days or longer; early research crews are expected to consist of two scientists after a two‑week training program.

The habitat’s moon‑pool allows direct egress to the seafloor, enabling continuous, pressure‑preserved sampling of marine organisms, coral‑reef restoration work, water‑quality monitoring and studies of human physiology in extreme environments. DEEP has secured DNV classification and is conducting sea‑acceptance testing. Up to US$50,000 in research funding is available per team. Vanguard marks the first open‑ocean human habitat placed in U.S. waters in more than four decades and serves as a stepping‑stone toward the larger, modular Sentinel system planned for later this decade.
